Undertale is undeniably one of the most revolutionary games of all time. The entire game takes place through 5 locations underground after ‘The Human’ falls into Mt. Ebott and wakes up in a world of monsters and evil flowers. How well do these locations serve as a backdrop for one of the greatest indie games ever? Keep reading to find out!
*Caution Spoilers Ahead*
#5 – Hotland

The penultimate area in Undertale has been tacked with the number 5 spot. While it is ranked last, Hotland is absolutely not a bad area. There are no bad areas in Undertale. However, even with the true lab and the CORE, the other areas in the game bring more to the table that I can’t justify bringing Hotland up any further. Most of the time, walking through Hotland feels like trudging from interesting area to interesting area with very little in between.
#4 – Waterfall

Already a jump up in quality, Waterfall has grabbed the number 4 position in the rankings. The third area in the game comes just before the previously mentioned Hotland and is a much nicer location. This is the place where the character deals with Undyne and it is such a memorable part of the game. From the garbage dump to Sans’ Sentry Station. The Waterfall is a solid all-rounder.
#3 – Snowdin

Snowdin has grabbed the middle spot in the list and it is a well earned position. This is where we first meet Sans and Papyrus, the community’s most beloved characters. It is also where a great host of the monsters we’ve encountered so far spend their free time and live their lives. It is not often in a game you get to roam around the enemies hometown village and visit their houses and local establishments. Don’t forget to visit Grillby’s after finishing some impossible puzzles.
#2 – New Home

New Home is the final area you visit in Undertale and it hits hard. Arguably, two of the most memorable locations in the game are located in New Home, those being The Last Corridor and The Barrier. The Last Corridor is where Sans reveals the true meaning of EXP and LOVE and judges the protagonist based on the amount collected of both. After leaving The Last Corridor you enter The Barrier, a trippy white and black corridor looking room, which separates the monster world from the human realm. It is in this room you fight Asgore, the king of the monsters.
#1 – The Ruins

The number one spot has to go to, of course, the Ruins. This is the first area we encounter in Undertale and it is such an enjoyable journey. From Toriel guiding us through the puzzles, to our first encounter with Flowey. The Ruins are the perfect opening for a game such as this and lets the player know that this isn’t your typical RPG.
